Interactive Brokers Review UAE 2026

Interactive Brokers is licensed by the DFSA through its branch in the DIFC. A global broker offering real shares, ETFs, bonds and options across more markets than any other broker we review, at low cost. Its platforms are feature-rich and suit experienced investors.

Interactive Brokers platform overview

Interactive Brokers is one of the oldest and most trusted names in online broking, and it now serves the UAE directly through a DFSA-regulated branch in the DIFC. For UAE investors that combination is rare: institutional-grade pricing and a genuinely global product range, wrapped in local regulation and local AED funding. The trade-off is complexity. IBKR rewards investors who take the time to learn it and can feel heavy-handed for anyone expecting a simple, app-first experience.

Our expert verdict

For serious UAE investors who want the widest asset range and the lowest running costs, IBKR is very hard to beat. Beginners and anyone who prioritises a frictionless interface or copy trading should look elsewhere first.

What to watch out for

  • UAE clients contract with IB (U.K.) Ltd, not a standalone local entity. There is no DFSA compensation scheme: protection depends on where assets are custodied.
  • Currency conversion has two methods: manual spot FX costs far less than the automatic service on large sums.
  • Only the first withdrawal each calendar month is free; wires cost up to $10.
  • Crypto is not available to UAE DIFC-branch retail clients.
  • Per-trade minimums make very small trades proportionally expensive.

How we tested Interactive Brokers

We bought one Apple share on our own funded account on 24 September 2026 and it filled at 337.63, yet the position's average price read 338.63: the extra $1 is Interactive Brokers' minimum US stock commission, 0.30% of that trade where the quoted rate of half a cent a share would have been $0.005. That account is held with Interactive Brokers LLC of Greenwich, Connecticut, not with the Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited (DIFC Branch) entity this review covers, so the commission, the $2 taken on a small currency conversion and the $10 withdrawal fee we report are all the US company's numbers. The author opened it, funded it, traded it and withdrew from it as a UAE resident, so the testing is genuinely first-hand, but the DIFC branch itself was not tested and nothing here should be read as a test of it. We verified the branch's regulatory status against the DFSA public register, where it appears under reference F008423 with permission to arrange rather than to hold client assets.

Safety, regulation & UAE legal entity

4.9
Safety / 5

IBKR scores highly on safety. The group is publicly listed on NASDAQ, publishes audited financials and segregates client funds. UAE clients contract with IB (U.K.) Ltd, whose head office is FCA-regulated, with most assets custodied at the SEC-regulated IB LLC. That US custody brings SIPC cover of $500,000 (cash sublimit $250,000) plus excess SIPC. The nuance to understand is that there is no DFSA compensation scheme and UK FSCS applies only in limited circumstances. So your protection depends on where your money and investments are held, not just on the DIFC branch.

Account opening

4.0
Opening / 5

Opening an account is fully digital but thorough. You choose IBKR Pro with Fixed or Tiered pricing, then supply personal details, investment experience, and proof of identity and UAE residency. Emirates ID plus a recent UAE bank statement covers the residency check. Most applications are active within about two business days once verified and funded. The process can feel bureaucratic, and if automated verification stalls, manual document upload usually resolves it.

Funding is by bank transfer. Setting the deposit currency to dirhams offers exactly two routes, a bank transfer or a transfer from a linked Wise balance, and IBKR quotes the bank route as "available in 1 business day or less". Cards and e-wallets are not accepted, which will surprise investors used to instant top-ups. The offsetting advantage for UAE clients is local AED funding via First Abu Dhabi Bank, often processed as a same-day domestic payment. Withdrawals are free once per calendar month, after which IBKR publishes fees from $1 for local bank methods to $10 for wires.

This is IBKR's strongest suit: clients reach 170 markets in 29 currencies, covering stocks, ETFs, bonds, funds, forex, commodities, options and futures, plus fractional shares. There is no copy or social trading. Two caveats matter for UAE investors: crypto is not available to DIFC-branch retail clients, and ADX and DFM listings need enabling through Trading Permissions before you can trade them.

Fees and spreads

Fees / 5

IBKR's published commission schedule is among the lowest available anywhere, but it is not the simplest. US stocks and ETFs cost $0.005 per share on the Fixed plan (minimum $1) or $0.0035 on Tiered (minimum $0.35), both set out in IBKR's own worked commission examples. Options run $0.65 per contract. Currency conversion is the standout for UAE investors: 0.03% on the automatic service, or as little as 0.20 bps (minimum $2) via a manual spot conversion, far below typical UAE bank rates. There are no deposit fees and no inactivity fee. The main watch-outs are the per-trade minimums, which make very small trades proportionally expensive, and market-data subscriptions that are billed separately.

IBKR's DIFC branch gives UAE investors something most global brokers cannot: local DFSA regulation, a dedicated UAE client services team, AED as a base currency, and low-cost AED funding through FAB. Those are real, practical advantages. The gaps are the absence of a dedicated Islamic account and, the need to enable ADX and DFM permissions before trading UAE-listed shares.

Customer support

4.0
Support / 5

Support runs through live chat (including an AI assistant), email, a contact form and phone, with a dedicated UAE line. It is primarily English-language.

Inside the account it is a three-step funnel: account items, then a Quick Support search answered by IBKR's IBot, and only then Contact Us. At the end of it a single route is offered, ticket creation, against a response time IBKR states as up to 48 hours. Tickets sort into eleven categories and the form asks for specifics, timing and reference numbers, with room for two attachments. Alongside sit self-service tools most brokers do not expose: trade cancellation requests, an FX execution comparison, short stock availability and a pattern day trader reset.

Two things worth knowing. Asked from our UAE-resident account how to reach support, IBot answered with an Australian web address rather than a Gulf or DIFC one. And the one support email we have received came from a representative of Interactive Brokers LLC in Connecticut, not from the DIFC branch. We did not send a ticket, so we make no claim about response times of our own; the 48 hours is IBKR's figure, not ours.

Research & education

4.6
Research / 5

Research sits in the account rather than on a marketing site. The Research tab opens on a Daily Overview carrying Benzinga and Reuters wires timestamped to the minute and a Bloomberg Television panel, with Portfolio News, Watchlist News and a subscriptions manager alongside. Behind it are two market screeners, a mutual fund scanner, a bond scanner, a Fundamentals Explorer, Investment Themes, an events calendar and exchange notices. We ran the stock screener on our own account: 7,072 US-listed names, filtered by a blended-factor ranking, with separate tabs for Asia, Europe and ETFs.

Education is a separate property, Traders' Academy on IBKR Campus. Its catalogue runs from Stocks, Options and Bonds through Economics, Fundamentals, the IBKR tools themselves, the API, Institutions, Futures, CME Group, Taxes and a Student Trading Lab, with courses offered in a range of languages.

That is breadth, and breadth is unusual at this scale. It is not a verdict on quality: we have not taken the courses or traded on the research, so this section describes what is on offer rather than scoring it.

Verdict

Interactive Brokers is the strongest all-round choice for experienced UAE investors who want maximum reach and minimum cost, now with the added reassurance of a locally regulated DIFC branch and AED funding. It asks for patience in return: a complex platform and a detailed onboarding process. Support is English-primary and we did not test response times, so we make no claim about them. If that trade-off suits you, few brokers compete. If you want simplicity or copy trading, start elsewhere.

Recent news

  • Third-quarter results due on 15 October

Interactive Brokers Group will publish Q3 2026 results after the US close on Thursday 15 October, with a call the same afternoon. Worth a line because IBKR's Nasdaq listing and published results are part of the transparency case in our safety section; we will add the figures when they are out.

  • Trade from X cashtags, for US investors only

IBKR added an integration that lets investors go from a stock or crypto ticker on X straight to trading on Interactive Brokers. It is described as a US offering, so it does not reach a UAE client, whose account cannot hold crypto in any case.

    Interactive Brokers press releases
  • Client accounts up 35% to 5.46 million

IBKR's August metrics put client accounts at 5.460 million and client equity at $962.8 billion, both up 35% on a year earlier. These are group-wide figures: they describe the size of the business behind a UAE client's account, not anything specific to the DIFC branch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Interactive Brokers regulated in the UAE?
Yes. UAE clients are introduced by Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited (DIFC Branch), DFSA reference F008423, which is licensed to arrange only. Your account is with IB (U.K.) Ltd and your assets are held by Interactive Brokers LLC.
Can I fund my account in AED?
Yes, and AED can be held as a base currency. IBKR's deposit instructions send dirhams to First Abu Dhabi Bank in Abu Dhabi under SWIFT NBADAEAAVOS, with the beneficiary named as Interactive Brokers LLC, and IBKR's own screen quotes "available in 1 business day or less". We have not made an AED deposit ourselves, so we cannot time that route. Our own funding was a USD wire from a UAE bank, which the bank labelled a SWIFT transfer that "can take up to 5 days" and which IBKR credited the same day, 16 June 2026.
Is my money protected as a UAE client?
There is no DFSA retail compensation scheme. To the extent your assets are custodied with IB LLC, they are covered by SIPC up to $500,000 (cash sublimit $250,000) plus excess SIPC. UK FSCS applies only in limited circumstances.
Does IBKR offer an Islamic or swap-free account?
We could not confirm that Interactive Brokers offers a swap-free account, so treat it as not offered.
Can I trade crypto with Interactive Brokers in the UAE?
No. Crypto is not available to UAE DIFC-branch retail clients, and our own Interactive Brokers LLC account was refused crypto deposits too: the portal advertises a Deposit Crypto option and returns "You are not currently eligible to perform crypto deposits" on opening it. IBKR does not say why.
